John Green just retweeted Philip DeFranco’s tweet that the new paid channels are here…
My question, I can see these 53 channels from the Netherlands. Are they the same in the US and other parts of the world?

Please recommend me some YouTube channels! My subbox is empty too often.
To give you an indication, some YouTubers I like watching in no particular order:
For real… you’re a youtuber.. calm yo tits.
Yes!!! Sometimes I remember the days when it was frowned upon when the first partners started monetising their videos… Stark contrast with today, lol
NO I DO NOT WANT TO USE MY FULL NAME ON YOUTUBE
GO AWAY
STOP ASKING
Just spent some time browsing through UTubeDrama.com via the internet archives (as the website is no longer online).
It’s amazing how irrelevent most of the people mentioned in 2007/2008 now are…
Some people that are mentioned are still here: sxephil is mentioned a lot cause of his ToS violating boob thumbnails, Charlie is mentioned as being the reason fiveawesomeguys has 8,000 subscribers (which, believe it or not, was a lot back then). fiveawesomeguys also shouldn’t be monetised according to the dear Trevor Rieger, because it’s a collab channel and should be about community…
Then I stumbled upon December 18 (It hink 2007) and the Project for Awesome is mentioned.. not by name, but all Trevor’s blurbs are about how much everyone hates NerdFighters cause they are gaming the system by taking over the charts and monetising charity videos… bla bla bla
It’s amazing how no one cares about the fact that YouTuber’s make money off of YouTube anymore. Back then it was this dirty thing people did with their content, and if you did it on a crappy or ‘community’ video then you’d be crucified. Some of our favourite YouTuber’s indiegogo campaigns would have been considered the worst form of e begging.
Also the copyright issues are clearly visible.. The viacom situation was unfolding..
Anyway, everyone hates/hated UTubeDrama, and Trevor Rieger’s posts were very one sided and out of context, but it’s surprisingly addicting browsing through old news.
My new video is up! I talk about the first two movies of my 50/50 project: Les Misérables and another.. movie.. type thing..
I hope you like it <3
I honestly think that this moment in Becoming YouTube was so illustrative of how YouTube works at the moment.
It is okay to be younger and it is okay to be impressed by Tom Milsom, but primarily number two is important because it puts Tom Milsom on a higher level than the boy, whereas before I feel there wasn’t much of a difference in level. Everyone approached everyone as a fellow YouTuber as equals, or nearly equals… It’s okay to admire someone but when there were fewer people, it was easier to equate yourself to whoever you admire.. Now with so many other people admiring other people, there’s a certain need to claim someone or getting their attention, standing out. I think this is where the fangirl culture comes from, and how that may escalate to dangerous situations…
/late night ramble about things only I find interesting… and also probably inaccurate.
Also please note that I’m not trying to judge the boy, and that I do not think he’s a bad person or whatever. He seems to be a pretty funny dude :D

Very good video by Chris Kendall (crabstickz) about quitting YouTube.
I’m sure a lot of people can relate to things he’s saying. It doesn’t have to be YouTube related.. I had this a bit with art stuff, there’s so many people better so I’m just not gonna do it, and as he says, that’s bad.
Also his view on YouTube is absolutely right and ties in with a discussion I had at a YouTube gathering today. I think we ALL need to quit the bullshit.
Ladies and Gentlemen, it is officially the year 2013, and in eight months time, the greatest YouTube gathering of them all, Summer in the City, will be back in full swing without distractions like the Olympics or the Diamond Jubilee. As said in their announcement video, it will be harder, better, faster and stronger than any other before it.
“WAIT, £10 TICKETS?!? TO SEE YOUTUBERS?!? WHAT IS THIS MADNESS?”
That, everyone is the sound of the entitled fangirl/boy who have no sense of economy, no sense of sensibility, and no sense of celebrity. It is these types of people who have ironically driven the organisers of this giant gathering to move indoors in order to remove a threat to public safety.
Jep.
Some of the things said make me sad (paraphrasing but; SitC is no longer a gathering but an event), but it’s REALISTIC.
I, uh, I did a thing. A video thing.
God, I hope I’m not gonna regret this :/
Rebloggin myself in case you went to bed at a reasonable hour last night!

At SitC 2012, we hosted the event in a venue with a capacity of 2,500. On the Saturday of the weekend-long event, we were forced to turn away almost 1,000 people who had queued at the door for a couple of hours, because the venue was just too full.
In September of this past year, YouTube user Tobuscus announced he was holding a gathering in Hyde Park. Over 2,000 of his fans attended and despite protests to give him space, the crowd mobbed him to the point where he was pinned against a fence, and had to climb over it and jump in a taxi to avoid being hurt.
And just last moth, another gathering was hosted in Hyde Park. The Festive Gathering again saw almost 2,000 YouTubers crowding the people they look up to, including Bertie Gilbert, who had to be escorted by police to safety.
This is the reality of YouTube gatherings now. There are just… too many people. Everyone and no one is to blame at the same time. It’s a very complex situation because you can’t, you cannot just tell certain people to not attend. Especially to a free event in a public space where they have a chance of meeting their favourite YouTubers.
This is why it is imperative we initiate a ticketing system for SitC this year. It is fast becoming the biggest annual UK gathering, and we have done everything we can to provide a service where people can come and enjoy interacting with like-minded content creators, and meet their idols. We want to keep doing that. But as long as the numbers keep growing, it can’t be done safely in a public space like a park, and it can’t be done in a small venue where people may travel many miles to attend, only to be turned away.
We want to host SitC this year in a space big enough to do everything we have done over the past few years, without disappointing people and also controlling the numbers to avoid endangering anyone’s safety. But we can’t just find somewhere like that for free. The money has to come from somewhere.
Personally we believe we’ve done pretty well these past four years to cater to the numbers we had, for the most part without charging a penny. But this is the reality of the event now. If we can’t hold it at a large enough venue, we can’t hold it at all. Because we refuse to compromise the safety and wellbeing of innocent people whose only crime is wanting to be a part of the huge and diverse community that we have created over the years.
With this in mind, however, we appreciate all your feedback and we do still want to make this gathering great, especially since it will now be a paid event. So we would like to finish off by announcing that we will be reducing the ticket price to £10. Anyone who has already purchased a ticket will be refunded, as the change in the system means you will have to repurchase.
Also just a couple more things to clear up -
- Tickets are for admission to SitC over the entire weekend (i.e. don’t buy two for two days).
- The rumour that SitC will only be 18+ is a complete lie. Nowhere have we stated this and in no way is it true. Please refrain from fuelling the rumour mill, no-one but us knows more than what’s already been announced.
Thanks for all your support over the past few years, and see you in August!
